🎧 1. Introduction
Host (Riëtte): Hi everyone, and welcome back to Thrivve, the podcast about embracing life after 50 with heart, adventure, and soul. I’m your host, Riëtte—and today, I’m inviting you into something a little more personal. Over the holidays, I visited my children in Poland, and what unfolded was a winter tale straight out of a storybook.
From glühwein in the snow to castle ruins and cheeky bronze dwarves, this trip was filled with wonder, warmth, and connection. Let’s unwrap this magical holiday together.
✨ 2. Christmas Market Charm
There’s something about a European Christmas market that wraps you in nostalgia. Wrocław’s Market Square transforms into a glittering winter wonderland—handcrafted ornaments, twinkling stalls, the scent of roasted nuts in the air… and, of course, mugs of steaming glühwein that keep hands warm and hearts even warmer.
🧙♂️ 3. Dwarf Hunting Adventures
Wrocław’s surprise: bronze dwarves hidden all around the city. These quirky little statues, each with a name and personality, turn city strolls into a playful scavenger hunt. It became a full-on family competition—who could find the most? Some were cheeky, some sleepy, and each brought a smile.
🔥 4. Following the Lamplighter
On a frosty evening, we followed a tradition lost in time. Dressed in historical garb, the lamplighter of Wrocław still walks Cathedral Island, lighting gas lamps by hand. Watching each flame flicker to life felt like stepping into a fairytale. We were lucky to catch him at the start of his route.
🏰 5. A Castle with a Dark History
One of our day trips took us to Książ Castle—an imposing fortress filled with mystery. Seized during World War II, it holds unfinished tunnels that whisper secrets of the past. It’s grand, haunting, and humbling all at once.
🥾 6. Hike to the Old Castle
To lift our spirits, we hiked snowy trails to the ruins of an old mountain castle. The forest felt cinematic in its winter stillness. We paused, breathed in the quiet beauty, and headed back just before the sun dipped behind the hills.
🎓 7. The Soul of the City – University of Wrocław
No visit is complete without stepping inside the University. The Aula Leopoldina, with its baroque splendour, left us speechless. Walking those halls, you feel the weight of history and brilliance—a place where great minds once walked.
⛷️ 8. Snowy Thrills at the Czech Border
We took a detour to a ski resort near the Czech border. While the daredevils in the family hit the slopes, I enjoyed snowshoe walks, sledge rides, and warm cocoa breaks. And no—no snow angels from me this time!
🌳 9. Wandering Wrocław’s Winter Parks
Between adventures, we found calm in snow-draped parks. Sitting with a hot mug on a bench, listening to bells in the distance—it was the kind of peace you want to bottle and keep forever.
❤️ 10. Final Thoughts / CTA
Host (Riëtte): This trip wasn’t just about travel—it was about reconnection. It was about being with my children, Ruan and Marisa, and collecting moments that stitched us even closer together. Wrocław gave us magic, memory, and meaning this Christmas.
