The Clivia Corner
You know those quiet spots in the garden — cool, green, not much grows there? That’s where clivias shine. They don’t fuss. They just settle in, add colour, and make the shade look alive.
Let’s keep it simple: where should we plant Clivias, how to keep them happy, how to deal with those hated lily borers, and where in South Africa you can find the prettiest ones.
You’ll get:
- Light and placement
- Gentle soil prep
- A few easy design tricks
- A calm plan for lily borers
- And a handful of trusted nurseries
Start by Watching the Light
Clivias like light, but in bright shade, soft sun, and underneath large trees that allow light to filter through branches. Try this: take a walk early in the morning, then again in the afternoon. Watch how the light moves. See where rainwater hangs around. Jot a few notes or sketch a small plan — nothing fancy. That’s your planting guide.
Soil, Not Perfection
Don’t overthink the soil. Loosen the top layer with a fork; don’t dig deep. Add compost, a bit of sand for breathing room, and something rich — worm castings or old manure.
Place the plant so its crown just peeks above the soil line. Water gently. Mulch with bark or leaves. That’s it.
Want to know when to water? Poke your finger in. If the top bit feels damp, skip it. Winter — even less.
Make It Look Natural
Clivias always look be in groups. Three, five, maybe seven. Odd numbers feel right somehow. Plant them along a path or beneath a tree.
Pair them with ferns or plectranthus. Even if you want height.
Colour-wise — orange and bronze for bold shade, yellow and peach for gentle corners, and green if you’re after something special.
When Lily Borers Visit
You’ll know. Leaves get holes, or a fine brown dust appears. Sometimes the whole fan droops.
Check once a week. Look under the leaves. Cut out badly damaged bits and toss them — not on the compost. Start with a soft spray, something biological, late in the day. Only go stronger if you have to, and follow the label carefully.
Healthy plants bounce back fast. Keep them fed and mulched.
Where to Find Them
Try Clivias4Africa, Utopia Clivias, Karkloof Clivias, Boschdal Nursery, or the Clivia Society if you want to explore varieties.
Keep It Easy
Once a week, give them a quick tidy. Check the soil. After flowering, trim off old stalks or split crowded clumps. From spring to late summer, watch for borers.
That’s all they need.
Shade can be soft and full of colour. Tell me — what’s your favourite clivia shade? Orange? Yellow? Maybe that rare green? Share a photo when yours bloom.
See you in the garden. 🌿
