Walking into a Healthy and Stress-Free Life
By David, 52-year-old Entrepreneur, Proud Reformed Couch Potato
Let me take you back a bit.
A year ago, I was the guy who could tell you the best late-night takeout spots within a 10km radius — from my couch. Between juggling meetings, client calls, and running a business, I somehow managed to completely drop the ball on the one person I was supposed to be managing first: me.
I was stress-eating my way through deadlines and skipping anything that even remotely resembled exercise. My morning routine? Coffee, emails, and a pastry (or three). Before I knew it, I’d packed on 20kg and was diagnosed with Stage 2 Hypertension — something the doctor ominously called “the silent killer.” That’s a phrase that hits you right in the existential crisis.
I decided right then and there that this was not how my story was going to end. So, I did something radical: I started moving.
And I mean literally started small — 10-minute bodyweight workouts in the morning that initially felt like I was training for the Olympics… with the fitness level of a soggy crouton. I also committed to a daily 30-minute walk. At first, it felt like dragging a bag of cement around the neighborhood, but slowly, something started to shift.
Six months in, I’ve lost 10kg. My blood pressure is no longer trying to break world records, and I’ve upgraded my walks to a solid 10,000 steps a day. My workouts? I now actually enjoy them (okay, maybe not burpees — nobody enjoys burpees). I exercise six days a week for 30 minutes and feel like I’m finally in control of my health, rather than at its mercy.
The biggest surprise? The stress. It’s not gone — I mean, I still run a business — but it’s manageable. Exercise has become my therapy. It clears my head, gives me energy, and weirdly makes me a nicer person to be around (just ask my wife). I’m sharper at work, more present at home, and a whole lot happier in my own skin.
So yeah, I walked — and squatted, planked, and sweat — my way into a healthier, stress-free life. If you’re reading this thinking, “That could be me,” then guess what? It can be.
Start small. Start tired. Start where you are. Just start.
And if you’re wondering what happened to the pastries… let’s just say we’re seeing each other a lot less these days.
