From the Motor Trade to the Sewing Machine – Early Inspirations & Lifelong Passion

Host: Zettie, welcome to Thrivve. Let’s start at the very beginning. Tell us a bit about your story.

Guest (Zettie): Good afternoon. Well, it might surprise people to know that I spent more than 40 years in the motor trade. But while cars and engines paid the bills, my true passion—what really made my heart sing—was always sewing.

I can remember being just four years old, sitting with my grandmother, watching her work. She was a seamstress of note—she designed coats and hats and carried a great love for the craft. That passion filtered straight into me. My mom was also a seamstress, so really, I grew up surrounded by fabric, patterns, and creativity.

I’ve got a sister, just 11 months older, and she’s also a brilliant seamstress—specialising in wedding dresses. For me, the love of sewing was there from the very beginning. At 18, when most of my friends were buying their first cars or handbags, I bought my first sewing machine. And I told myself, “Right now, this is just a hobby. But one day, when I retire, it’s going to mean something more.”Host Reflection: Many of us have those whispers of passion early in life—things that light us up but get tucked away while we focus on careers, families, and the busyness of life. Zettie’s reminder: it’s never too late to bring that passion into full bloom.

Reinvention After Retrenchment – Turning a Setback into a Second Act

Host: So, Zettie, fast-forward a few decades. You’ve spent a lifetime in the motor trade. What happened that made you finally take sewing seriously?

Guest: I was retrenched at the age of 62. After years of quiet urging, the voice finally said: Now is the time. I started working full-time in sewing, beginning with alterations for a bridal company called Olivetti. I was working on up to 14 dresses a month—long hours, late nights, but I loved it. Still, I knew I could offer brides more than just alterations. So, I decided to start on my own.

I realised brides and young women have hectic schedules. They can’t always sneak away from work during office hours. So I created a business that offered fittings after hours, early mornings, weekends—whatever worked for them. And if a bride couldn’t fetch her dress, I made sure it could be collected at any time. That personal service—meeting them where they are—that’s what made my business grow.Host Reflection: Reinvention after 60 can feel terrifying, especially after a significant setback like retrenchment. But look at Zettie—she took a setback and turned it into a setup for her dream. The key wasn’t just skill; it was thoughtful service and heart.

The Artistry of Sewing – Fabrics, Fittings & Creating Memories

Host: Tell us about your craft. What excites you most when you sit at your sewing machine?

Guest: I love working with exceptional fabrics. From the moment a bride or a matric girl walks through the door, I want her to feel special. We often go fabric shopping together so they’re part of the process. It’s not just about sewing; it’s about creating memories. I’ve made jackets, gowns, corsets—you name it. And I still do classes. Sewing evolves, and I always want to keep learning.

My favourite moment? The final fitting—or arriving at a wedding venue to help a bride get dressed. Making sure she’s calm, the dress fits perfectly, and she feels stunning. When the stress melts away and she lights up—that’s priceless.Host Reflection: Zettie isn’t just sewing garments. She’s sewing confidence, joy, and memories. That’s the leap from hobby to calling.

Adding a Personal Touch – Embroidery, Service & Going Beyond Expectations

Guest: I also do embroidery, which adds another layer of personalisation. Every dress goes into a specially embroidered bag with the bride’s name—a keepsake for their memories. And service is everything. Many brides said what they loved most wasn’t only the dress, but how they were made to feel—stress-free, special, cared for.Host Reflection: This is why word-of-mouth built Dream Threads. Extraordinary experiences spark organic growth more powerfully than any billboard.

Beyond the Business – A Life of Passions

Host: Sewing is your big passion, but you’ve got many others. Tell us more.

Guest: I’ve loved embroidery for years. During a tough season 20 years ago, I bought a small Brother machine and started embroidering face cloths for orphanages, often with children’s names. Later, I invested in a Bernina and now create baby items, quilts, and personalised gifts.

I go to the gym daily. I love my garden—planting, nurturing, being outdoors. I also studied pastry and catering with a five-year course—late nights and lots of work, but worth it. Baking and cooking balance me. I manage time with a diary and set weekly goals. Keep learning, keep doing, keep thriving.

Lessons in Thriving After 60 – Time Management, Balance & New Beginnings

Host: You embody the Thrivve spirit—living vibrantly after 50 (and beyond!). What advice do you have for someone feeling stuck?

Guest: Don’t underestimate yourself. Don’t waste time on what you can’t change. If you don’t like something, leave it and try something new. Time management is everything. Even retired, I get up at the same time, plan my day, and make it count. You don’t have to watch TV all day—learn, create, move, or enjoy the garden. Life is short, full of beauty and possibility.

Closing Reflections – Takeaways & Encouragement

Host: What a conversation. Zettie’s story reminds us that thriving isn’t about waiting for the perfect moment—it’s about saying yes to passion, yes to learning, and yes to living fully at any age. Retirement doesn’t have to mean retreat; it can be a launchpad into your most colourful, fulfilling season.

What hobby or dream have you put aside? Maybe it’s time to dust it off and see how it could bring new energy, purpose, and even income into your life. Zettie, thank you for sharing your story, your wisdom, and your joy with us. You are a true Thrivver.
